Why keep up the lie?

So I've been thinking about the word "friend" lately. A lot of people throw it around, but I take it seriously.

A couple of years ago I met a girl named "Alicia" who was all excited about making new friends. Over the next two years she proceeded to stab, re-stab, back-stab, and front stab anyone she possibly could if she thought it would make her life in anyway better. The thing is though, now no one takes her seriously. Even her "closest" friends make fun of the fact that she only talks to you if she wants something.

I've tried to figure out why she's this way, and my only conclusion is that it is due to low self-esteem. I don't think she likes herself and because of that she doesn't think she deserves loyalty, and since she doesn't deserve it she doesn't expect it, and since she doesn't expect it, she doesn't give it.

I feel sorry for her, I truly do. I mean, in reality, she's pretty pathetic and she's smart enough to know it. It must be disappointing to her how her life has worked out. I'm sure she's just trying to make the best out of a bad situation, but her actions are only making it worse. At this point, however, it is impossible for her to see what she is doing to herself, so I guess we'll all just continue to pretend to enjoy her company and wait until she eventually leaves to make fun of her.
